What is the solution for water retention caused by Yasmin, OCP?
18 مارس 2015

د. Zakia Dimassi طب الأطفال
Yasmin is an combination oral contraceptive pill (combination OCP), that is to say, it is made of two hormonal components: drospirenone (a synthetic progesterone; progesterone is the main pregnancy hormone), and Ethinyl estradiol (a synthetic estrogen, the main female hormone). Yasmin is characterized by having a low estrogenic activity (meaning a low estrogen to progesterone activity ratio), so it is not supposed to cause so much body swelling as is the case when using high estrogen activity OCPs. First off, you need to be very careful regarding your daily salt intake, including from canned goods, carbonated beverages (these contain sodium bicarbonate), pickles, olives etc.., and avoid drinking too much fluids close to bed time. If despite taking these measures, the swelling does not improve, discuss this issue with your treating doctor to maybe find an alternative or aid with an additional medication.
