What vitamins should be given to a baby starting from 1 year old?
25 أكتوبر 2015

د. Zakia Dimassi طب الأطفال
A healthy one year old child who was not prematurely born, who eats a variety of foods and is gaining adequate weight and height, is in no need for vitamin supplements. This is because your baby is receiving all his needs of vitamins and minerals from food, especially that most milk formulas and baby cereals are now fortified with iron.

If your baby does not have deficiency on blood tests, you do not need to give him vitamin supplements. If however he has previously had iron deficiency anemia and was receiving iron supplements, then you should do a repeat blood test to check how he's doing and if there's a need to continue giving the iron.

You may choose to keep your baby on vitamin D supplements because most children do not get enough sun exposure.

The rest of the supplements such as docosahexaenoic acid, which is said to be very important for brain development, are optional.
