My daughter aged 5 years had blood in the stool. She had diarrhea & stomach pain so we did a stool culture which came back negative. What's the cause?

If your daughter has had diarrhea for a few days, then the small amount of blood in the context of a negative stool culture can be explained by the presence of an anal fissure. What happens is, with the frequent passage of bowel movement even if it's loose or watery, there will be irritation to the anal area. Additionally, there may be some straining. So the anus may sustain a slit opening, called a fissure, which oozes some blood usually at the end of the bowel movement, whereby we notice dripping of fresh blood into the toilet seat or on the toilet paper. This fissure usually heals on its own, or we may accelerate the healing with the application of topical antibiotics and/or Stiz baths (warm water mixed with iodine solution, 3 times daily).
