If your son is otherwise healthy, and he has normal hair growth and pattern plus normal healthy nails, then we may be looking at a benign condition known as palmar and plantar hyperkeratosis (palmar for the palms of the hands, and plantar for the soles of the feet). This condition is characterized by thickening of the outer layers of the skin of the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Excess keratin deposition will then lead to desquamation, or peeling off of the outer layers of the skin. Treatment of this condition consists of exfoliation plus emollients. But it is necessary to rule out other more serious possibilities of the skin peeling, such as lichen or scabies infestation. It is therefore necessary to consult his pediatrician or a dermatologist on the matter.
