My friend once almost died during surgery because they gave her an anesthetic she was allergic to. Does this normally happen and what is done to prevent this?

as for anesthetic drugs, some are given IV, so we can theoretically test them, and others are inhaled, that can not be tested..
some patients have enzyme deficiency , so they can not clear the anesthesia medication, i think this is what happened to your friend.
we can prevent part of it, by taking good history from patients..
