Is it bad to take contraceptive pills for a prolonged period of time? I've heard it might dry out the eggs and cause infertility or at least difficulty in getting pregnant

This is not correct. Oral contraceptive pills prevent ovulation and medical evidence shows that it does not affect future fertility.
In addition evidence shows that taking oral contraceptive pills for 5 years or more might protect from ovarian cancer.
