Done in good hands, colonoscopy is a safe procedure. Some doctors do it under anesthesia while others don't but it should not be painful. Preparation of the colon is usually done the day before by drinking 3-4 liters of a solution designed to empty the intestines. Men over the age of fifty should do it every 5 years.
