There is not yet a clear-cut causal association between marijuana (cannabis) and psychosis. The evidence suggests that cannabis is associated with an increased risk of psychosis when it is used frequently. Recent research in Denmark suggests that marijuana-related psychosis exists bur very rarely, it's a short-lived psychotic disorder that seems to be brought on by cannabis use but which subsides fairly quickly once the individual has stopped using it. The same study also found that 3/4 of patients had a different psychotic disorder diagnosed within the next year, and nearly 1/2 still had a psychotic disorder 3 years later.
In conclusion: whether cannabis can trigger a primary psychotic disorder that would not have otherwise occurred is unclear. However, in most individuals who use cannabis, psychosis does not develop, which suggests that the increased risk must be related to other vulnerability factors (genetics, frequency, or early age of onset of cannabis misuse).
