If nasal blockage, which could result from a number of
problems occurring in the nose, such as nasal septal deviation, allergies,
collapsed nasal valves etc., becomes chronic, it may get complicated by a
condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (apnea = momentary cessation of
breathing) Syndrome. It is characterized by repetitive episodes of upper airway
obstruction that occur during sleep, usually associated with a reduction in
blood oxygen saturation.

To recognize whether or not you have OSA, you should take
note of the following:

  • ·
    excessive daytime
    sleepiness
  • ·
    frequent episodes of
obstructed breathing during sleep. (You cannot notice that but anyone observing
    you while you sleep would).

Associated features may include:

·
loud snoring
·
morning headaches
·
unrefreshing sleep
·
a dry mouth upon awakening
·
high blood pressure
·
overweight
·
irritability
·
change in personality
·
depression
·
difficulty concentrating
·
excessive perspiring during
sleep

·
heartburn
·
reduced libido
·
insomnia
·
frequent nocturnal
urination (nocturia)

·
restless sleep
·
nocturnal snorting, gasping,
choking (may wake self-up)

·
rapid weight gain
·
confusion upon awakening

In any case, whether or not you have some of the above
symptoms, it is wise to address your nasal problem to avoid long term
complications. I recommend that you consult an ear-nose-throat specialist.
