It is perfectly normal for a pregnant woman to have a slightly higher temperature. In fact, a slight rise in body temperature is considered to be one of the early signs of pregnancy. The average basal, or resting, body temperature is between 36.6 and 37.4 degrees Celsius, but this varies during the menstrual cycle. After ovulation, progesterone is released by the uterus in preparation for an anticipated fertilization, causing the body temperature to increase by roughly 1 degree. When you become pregnant, your body continues to release progesterone, as such your body temperature remains elevated. Your metabolic rate and heart rate increase as well, in order to keep up with the increased energy demands, generating extra heat. For consistency and to get optimal readings, it is best to measure your basal temperature as soon as you wake up, using an oral or rectal thermometer.
