- Diabetes has a genetic component but it is different between type 1 and type 2, and children of diabetics, although at higher risk, don't have to develop diabetes for sure.

His glucose is controlled but he hasn't started insulin treatment. He recently discovered he has diabetes & is eating 3 healthy meals/day (no sugar).

- Has your father been started on insulin treatment? Is his blood glucose well controlled? What kind of foods is he consuming (is he totally avoiding sugars and carbs)?
