What is a polyps in the womb ? and are they benign ?
29 مايو 2013

د. Rania Mousa الطب العام
Uterine polyps,Polyps of the uterus(womb),are overgrowths, or bulges, of the normal tissue lining the uterus into the uterine cavity. Polyps may also be found in the uterine cervix. Polyps are usually attached to the underlying uterus by a base or stalk, and they vary in size. These polyps are usually benign(non cancerous), although some can rarely be cancerous or can eventually turn into cancer (precancerous polyps).
they most commonly occur in women who are going through or have completed menopause (peri- and postmenopausal women), although younger women can get them, too
Signs of uterine polyps include:Irregular menstrual bleeding, heavy menstrual periods,Bleeding between menses,Vaginal bleeding after menopause, infertility .But some women may experience only light bleeding or spotting or may even be symptom-free.
Although the exact cause of uterine polyps is unknown, hormonal factors appear to play a role, they grow in response to circulating estrogen.
Risk factors include:
-Peri- or postmenopausal age
-High blood pressure (hypertension)
-Obesity
-Tamoxifen, a drug therapy for breast cancer
Your doctor may send a tissue sample for lab analysis to be certain you don't have uterine cancer because some precancerous changes of the uterus (endometrial hyperplasia) or uterine cancers (endometrial carcinomas) appear the same as uterine polyps.
for treatement options the doctor may recommends:
-Watchful waiting,if no symptoms, treatment is unnecessary unless you're at risk of uterine cancer.
-Certain hormonal medications including progestins and gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists, may shrink a uterine polyp and lessen symptoms. But usually as short-term solution
-Curettage this may be done to collect a sample for lab testing or to remove a polyp
-Surgical removal
