What causes a dilated left atrium?
4 ديسمبر 2013

د. Rony Shammas أمراض القلب
The atria are the two smaller upper chambers of the heart that empty the blood into the ventricles . The left atrium (LA) receives clean oxygenated blood from the lungs and passes it- through the mitral valve -to the left ventricle which is the main pumping chamber of the heart. In many cases the LA enlarges with age. Other conditions that affect the left ventricle or the mitral valve can also dilate the LA. Examples are hypertension (most common), mitral valve disease, congestive heart failure secondary to a weak or a stiff left ventricle , coronary artery disease and history of heart attack.

A dilation left atrium may be caused by mitral valve regurgitation or stenosis.
