In such cases, a PET scan (which usually shows uptake by suspicious nodules or masses), and/or a biopsy (to study the tissue characteristics on the cellular level) may be required to better characterize the described mass, especially if the patient in question has had a previous history of malignancy or a positive family history of malignant tumors.
