They work quite well for pain control at very low doses, much lower than the doses used to treat depression. Understanding the mechanism of why migraine happens shows that. It's thought that at least two brain chemicals -- serotonin and dopamine -- play a role in migraine attacks. On the other hand, antidepressants work on the regulation of the hormone serotonin in nerve cells, that is the relation, they are used to prevent pain and migraine at low level doses.
ANOTHER POINT I forgot to mention in the previous answer is that when a migraine attack occurs and you feel it is coming through aura, in this stage take the pain killers before the headache episodes come, that will lessen your pain and period of pain.
