My toe nail seems soft on the side where it attaches to skin.. It looks like the toe has gotten under the skin. Its swollen but dsnt ache much. (Same condition on both feet) what could it be?

This is known as ingrown toe nail. What happens is that the nail, due to hereditary factors, recurrent trauma (from poorly fitted shoes), or obesity, starts to grow on its lateral sides outside the nail groove (where the nail bed sits) and deep into the skin. The nail acts like a foreign body and incites an inflammatory process. The affected toe starts by becoming red and swollen (stage 1),then there's pus coming out that will crust (stage 2). With time infection will develop and a soft tissue that is reddish in color will protrude, this is called granuloma (stage 3).
Treatment:
Stage 1: wearing open shoes (in the summer) and shoes with a round or square tip on the winter (to avoid trauma to the toe.
-Stage 2: this requires cutting the sides of the affected toe and elevating them by placing pieces of cotton or gauze
-Stage 3 requires a surgical procedure in the doctor's office
Antibiotics, whether local or oral, may also be needed.
