My son, 7 years old, is short. Blood test & bone x-ray were clean but his doctor asked for a gland test. His grandpa & dad are short. Is it normal?

Hypothyroidism, or a poorly active thyroid gland, can be a cause of short stature in children, so this is why your son's pediatrician has ordered blood tests for thyroid hormones. Although knowing that there is a family history of short stature in the family, it is very likely that your son's height will be similar to that of his father and grandfather. But measuring the thyroid hormones level in the blood is important to complete the work-up of short stature, especially that if it turn out that your son does in fact have hypothyroidism, treatment must be initiated without delay to avoid further health consequences.
