Systematic hypertension (High Blood Pressure) impairs blood circulation. In the eye, this circulatory impairment may produce problems in the vessels supplying the retina, choroid, and optic nerve. Hypertension can lead to small hemorrhages and other characteristic changes in the retina and its vessels even without creating noticeable visual problems. An ophthalmologist retina (fundus) examination, therefore, is often important in detecting and diagnosing the presence of hypertensive retinopathy and following it's course. This can help overcome many of eye problems associated with systematic hypertension.
