It is recommended that you a doctor examine it - it could be a simple inflammation. But it is important to have it checked.

It could be a cyst. If it was there for several years and it started to hurt then either it is growing in size and putting pressure on area close to it, or if it is red and swollen then it could be infected. If the pain stays or increases then let it be checked by your Dr.
