A severe allergic reaction (medical term is anaphylaxis) includes generalized severe skin rash and swelling, breathing difficulty (the reaction affects the respiratory tract causing narrowing), and eventually low blood pressure which is the most serious aspect because this leads to little blood reaching the placenta, thus depriving the fetus from oxygen (oxygen is carried by red blood cells). The result is jeopardizing the baby's organs, especially the brain which is most vulnerable to hypoxia (low oxygen) or anoxia (absence of oxygen) . If blood flow to the fetus is reduced for more than a few minutes, there is a higher probability of anoxic brain injury, where there will be brain tissue damage, and death of brain cells will occur. In this case an emergency delivery is scheduled. The consequences on the baby's brain depend on the extent of the damage and the gestational age (how many weeks of pregnancy) at delivery.
