It all depends on high-risk behaviors that you might have engaged in, such as unprotected sexual encounters (with random partners), or recreational injection drugs, or you were in an area that is endemic for an infectious disease (like malaria, which once you contract, it remains in your system) etc. There is a checklist that is filled prior to blood donation, based upon which a blood donor candidate is judged as eligible or not.
