Hair loss on the scalp and beard area could be alopecia areata, a condition where the immune system attacks hair follicles causing hair to fall out.
This could be a cause of a systemic autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks its own anagen hair follicles and suppresses or stops hair growth. For example, T cell lymphocytes cluster around affected follicles, causing inflammation and subsequent hair loss.
Alopecia areata is usually treated with injections of cortisone.
However other causes can include ringworm, a fungal infection, which is less likely in an adult.
