Palpitations might be primary (the heart is causing its fast heart rate), or secondary (the heart is beating fast due to a non-cardiac stimulus, like stress, hyperthyroidism, stimulant intake, or other).

You should have a blood test and an electrocardiogram, and afterwards you might need a holter-EKG (a 24-hour electrocardiogram).
Treatment will be adapted to the final diagnosis.
