I had pancreatitis with complications for 2 months. Half of my pancreas had necrosis. I lost 18 kilos. What diet would help me regain my weight?

Recovering your weight may prove to be difficult in the first few months after resolution of the pancreatitis because the pancreas is still not fully functional (the pancreas produces enzymes that digest small peptides and fats), and you will have to follow a low-fat (not to exceed 30 grams of fat per day), high-fiber and high-protein diet. Eating fatty foods is not advisable as it will put strain on your pancreas and result in malabsorption, which by itself will lead to further weight loss. For the time being, you are encouraged to minimize red meat and fatty fish consumption, and focus your diet on poultry and less fatty fish. Of course your treating physician should be following up on your pancreatic enzymes levels to assess its function, and supply you with certain vitamins as deemed necessary (especially vitamins A, D, E and K which require a fat medium to get absorbed). It is highly recommended that you consult a nutrition specialist to optimize your diet and speed up weight regain without harming your pancreas.
