CRP stands for C- Reactive Protein. It is a fairly non-specific test . This protein may be elevated with any illness , inflammation or infection. By itself, it is rarely used to make a diagnosis or indicate a treatment. A special type of this protein called high sensitivity CRP ( hs CRP) is sometimes used to assess risk of a future heart attack. Elevated levels of hsCRP may indicate need to be more aggressive in treating cholesterol and blood pressure , and recommending smoking cessation and life style changes to reduce future cardiac problems.
