Graviola supplements are extracted from the Graviola plant, an evergreen plant that is found abundantly in the tropics. It has a wide array of medicinal uses (antibiotics, anticancer etc.). A number of scientific research articles, some of which are based on animal experiments, others are based on epidemiological studies (that is, studied that try to establish a link between the prevalence of a disease and certain traits or specific behaviors in a population), one of which was published in a well renowned medical journal, The Lancet, cite significant concerns regarding the use of Graviola as it has been found to contain a neurotoxin (a substance that harms the nerve cells), ammanicin. The correlation between Graviola and toxic effects on neurons was based upon the observation of increased prevalence of Parkinson disease in countries like Guatemala where they consume the Graviola fruit.
Though the Graviola supplements manufacturers claim that they use a safe concentration of the plant extract, a safe has not yet been established.
There are no known interactions between Graviola and other drugs.
In conclusion, I wouldn't recommend that you use these supplements, especially if you or someone in your family has Parkinson disease. Graviola is also a NO NO in pregnancy.
