So, to fully eliminate the possibility of HIV transmission to you, you must repeat the HIV serology test at 3 months and even at 6 months from exposure.
When the person becomes sero-positive, he might experience flu-like illness (like a common cold), or develop enlarged lymph nodes all over the body; this is called the primo-infection (the first infection). As you can notice, those symptoms are not specific for HIV infection as they can be present with any virus.
The patient with HIV might also have those symptoms during any stage of HIV infection.
The patient might then develop AIDS even after many years. So, there will be a deficiency in the immune system. The patient will start to have recurrent and unusual infections (that might be aggressive) and unusual malignancies.
Finally, it is always very important to have a protected sexual intercourse. Always use condoms.
