Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder (ie, there's no organic problem in the intestines), characterized by periods of constipation alternating with periods of diarrhea (loose stools sometimes containing mucus), intermittent abdominal pain and discomfort, a sense of urgency to defecate after meals, and a feeling of incomplete voiding (you feel there are still stools even after you pass a bowel movement). Passing bowel movements may reduce the abdominal pain.
IBS results from malfunction of the autonomic nervous system, the branch of the nervous system that controls and regulates functions like heart beat, breathing, and digestion. The symptoms tend to begin in late teens/early adulthood.
Lifestyle and dietary modifications are key in dealing with IBS: a fiber-rich diet, adequate fluid intake, frequent small meals, avoiding stress, and regular exercise.
