Autism spectrum disorders comprise various degrees of autism, from soft and minor to severe and major manifestations; so at times, if the signs and symptoms are subtle, they be missed by parents/caregivers clinicians. So although the diagnosis of an autistic disorder is highly unlikely in the mid to late teen years, in exceptional cases it is hypothetically possible.
